Thursday marked a devastating blow to President Joe Biden’s already shaky reputation in office. The findings of a special counsel investigation revealed that Biden mishandled top-secret documents. However, due to his age and cognitive decline, he will not face prosecution. The report described Biden as a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”
The news was brutal and raised concerns about Biden’s mental acuity. Megyn Kelly highlighted that 77% of the electorate has moderate or major concerns about Biden’s mental capabilities, leaving only 23% without any doubts. The criticisms surrounding Biden’s memory were further intensified by a press conference that aimed to portray the President as sharp and competent but only ended up making matters worse.
Despite these troubles, there is one person who still stands firmly by Biden’s side: Stephen Colbert. The host of the far-Left “Late Show” made sure to defend Biden, albeit with a touch of humor, from his perch at CBS. Colbert cleverly downplayed the report’s revelations, dismissing them as “old” news and poking fun at Special Counsel Robert Hur’s description of Biden as an elderly man.
However, Colbert’s support for Biden may not last forever. While he ridiculed the investigation, he subtly acknowledged that some leading Democrats are genuinely worried about its consequences. Colbert sarcastically hinted at possible cosmetic enhancements to improve Biden’s appearance. It’s clear that he sees Biden as the only barrier between the collapse of American democracy and an alternative that could be even worse.
Colbert acknowledges that concerns about Biden’s advanced age are valid but reminds voters that they will ultimately have to choose between the elderly President with memory issues or a potentially malicious elderly candidate. The current situation may change, though. The New York Times, renowned for its support of President Biden throughout his presidency, has been increasingly critical of his mental decline. The publication has not shied away from highlighting his disturbing moments that often go viral on social media but are ignored by other news outlets.
Colbert’s allegiance to Biden may falter if the media and Democrats no longer believe that Biden can secure a win in the upcoming election due to his age and declining mental faculties. If that happens, Colbert, along with other late-night hosts, may find the courage to satirically criticize Biden from their platforms.
Interestingly, Jon Stewart, who recently returned to his “Daily Show” hosting duties, proved to be tougher on Biden. He mocked both Biden and Donald Trump for their advanced ages, but he didn’t downplay Biden’s evident mental decline. In fact, Stewart challenged the Biden administration to release video evidence of the President’s mental acuity.
It remains to be seen if Colbert’s unwavering support for Biden will endure. As public opinion shifts and concerns about Biden’s cognitive abilities persist, Colbert might ultimately join those questioning the President’s fitness for office.
