What are critics saying about The Marvels Rotten Tomatoes score?

Rotten Tomatoes scores can sometimes be a harbinger of audience reception and the trajectory of a film’s success. Unfortunately, The Marvels has debuted with a less-than-stellar score on the platform.

The Marvels has received a Rotten Tomatoes score of 52%, according to the review aggregator’s website. The film — which follows the superhero adventures of Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan — joins Secret Invasion and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania as the third MCU project in 2023 to earn a “Rotten” rating, based on a sample of 88 reviews (at the time of this writing).

The trajectory of the Rotten Tomatoes score for The Marvels could change as more reviews pour in, and it’s not uncommon for movies to experience a shift in their percentages during the initial weeks following their release. Moreover, the audience score, once available, may paint a different picture, as it reflects the opinions of moviegoers rather than critics.

In addition to directing The Marvels, Nia DaCosta also co-wrote the script alongside Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik, and Zeb Wells. The movie also stars Zawe Ashton as the villainous Dar-Benn, with Samuel L. Jackson reprising his role as Nick Fury following his recent appearance in Secret Invasion.

Marvel only had one “Certified Fresh” movie in 2023

In 2023, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 emerged as the only Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to earn a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Directed by James Gunn, Vol. 3‘s critical success stands out in a year where other MCU entries have struggled to garner similar acclaim.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 served as a fitting farewell to the beloved team first brought to life by James Gunn. The final installment wrapped up the narrative arc he began in 2014, closing the chapter on the Guardians’ journey with the same mix of wit and warmth that defined the series.
