Last year, it was announced that Netflix had acquired the rights to the beloved video game franchise, Gears of War, and would be collaborating with The Coalition to develop a live-action movie and an animated series. While the director for the movie adaptation has yet to be announced, the creator of the Gears of War franchise, Cliff Bleszinski, believes that Zack Snyder would be an excellent choice for the job.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Bleszinski expressed his admiration for Snyder’s directing skills, especially when it comes to working with existing intellectual properties. Bleszinski specifically praised Snyder’s work on films like the Dawn of the Dead remake, certain superhero movies, and the groundbreaking film, 300. He believes that Snyder’s adaptation of 300 defined a whole new genre of filmmaking with its slow-motion shots and fast pans.
Despite this praise, Bleszinski did mention that he found Snyder’s recent film, Army of the Dead, to be disappointing and even admitted to turning it off halfway through. However, Bleszinski acknowledges that Snyder has an incredibly passionate fanbase and still believes that he would be a great fit to direct the Gears of War movie.
Additionally, Bleszinski commented on the possibility of Dave Bautista starring in the Gears of War movie. Initially skeptical of having a “big wrestler” like Bautista play the lead character, Marcus Fenix, Bleszinski changed his mind after realizing that wrestlers possess acting talent as well. Bleszinski cited Bautista’s performances in movies like the recent Blade Runner film and his role as Drax The Destroyer in the Knives Out as evidence of his range and suitability for the role.
The original Gears of War trilogy revolves around the conflict between humanity and the Locust Horde, an underground reptilian race, on the planet Sera. Marcus Fenix, a soldier in the Coalition of Ordered Governments, is chosen to lead a desperate mission to eradicate the Locust Horde and save humanity from destruction. Earlier this year, Jon Spaihts, known for his work on Dune, was selected to write the screenplay for the Gears of War movie adaptation.
With the stage set for the Gears of War movie on Netflix, fans and gamers eagerly anticipate an announcement confirming the director. Cliff Bleszinski’s suggestion of Zack Snyder as a great fit for the job adds an exciting prospect to the project. Although nothing is yet set in stone, the combination of Snyder’s directing prowess and the beloved Gears of War franchise holds promise for an epic and immersive cinematic experience.
