Edgar Wright, the renowned director of films like Baby Driver and Shaun of the Dead, has some strong words for Hollywood. In a recent interview, he stated that Hollywood franchises need to learn to “take a breather” and let audiences get excited again. According to Wright, the constant barrage of sequels, reboots, and spin-offs is causing audience fatigue, and it’s time for the industry to reevaluate its approach.

Wright’s comments are particularly timely, as Hollywood seems to be more franchise-focused than ever. In 2019, nine out of the top ten highest-grossing films were part of a larger franchise, whether it be Marvel, Star Wars, or the Fast and Furious series. While these films undoubtedly draw in large audiences and generate massive profits, Wright believes that the oversaturation of sequels and spin-offs is detrimental to the industry in the long run.

The director’s viewpoint is backed up by data. According to a study by PricewaterhouseCoopers, while the global entertainment and media market is projected to continue growing, the growth rate for cinema isn’t expected to keep pace with other forms of entertainment. This stagnation could be attributed to the overreliance on franchises, which often prioritize brand recognition over original storytelling.

Wright’s criticism isn’t a call for the end of franchises altogether, but rather a plea for diversity and innovation within the industry. He believes that taking a break from established franchises and focusing on original concepts can help reinvigorate audiences and bring back a sense of excitement to the moviegoing experience.

One need not look far for proof of Wright’s argument. In 2018, the original film A Quiet Place, directed by John Krasinski, became a surprise hit, earning over $340 million at the global box office. The success of A Quiet Place demonstrated that audiences are hungry for fresh, original storytelling that breaks away from the mold of the typical Hollywood franchise.

Ultimately, Wright’s comments should serve as a wake-up call for Hollywood executives. While franchises certainly have their place in the industry, it’s essential to strike a balance between familiar brands and original content.
