Did Jamie Lee Curtis’ request for ‘One Piece’ role receive a response from the showrunner?

In a recent Instagram post, actress Jamie Lee Curtis expressed her desire to play the role of Dr. Kureha in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the popular manga series, “One Piece.” The fan movement supporting Curtis for the role has been growing, and it seems like the show’s team is open to making it happen.

“One Piece” follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, as they search for the legendary treasure of the same name. Curtis addressed the fan campaign in her Instagram post, stating that she would lobby for the role once the ongoing strike by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers is settled and a fair contract is reached.

Matt Owens, the co-showrunner of the series along with Steven Maeda, responded to Curtis’ post, writing, “Mommy dearest, that’s why we sent you that figure! No need to lobby. Once we get what we deserve and get back to work, let’s talk!” It seems like Owens is fully supportive of Curtis playing the role and is looking forward to discussing it with her once the contract negotiations are resolved.

Curtis later shared another Instagram post featuring footage of herself in a media interview promoting the upcoming film “Halloween Ends.” In the interview, she mentioned that her daughter, Ruby Guest, had encouraged her to play the role of Dr. Kureha, a gray-haired doctor on Drum Island. This adds more weight to Curtis’ enthusiasm for the role.

“One Piece” premiered on Netflix last month and received an early renewal for a second season just two weeks later. Creator Eiichiro Oda hinted at the need for a great doctor in the future storyline, suggesting that the casting process for Dr. Kureha is underway. Fans are excited about the possibilities and eagerly await further updates.

It’s refreshing to see Jamie Lee Curtis actively engage with fans and express her interest in a specific role. Her dedication to the part and the support she has received from the show’s team bode well for her chances of landing the role of Dr. Kureha. Only time will tell if Curtis’ plea will lead to her joining the cast of “One Piece,” but for now, fans can remain hopeful.
