What is the tone of the new DC Universe, as revealed by James Gunn?

James Gunn and Peter Safran are set to usher in a new era for DC Studios with their upcoming film, Superman: Legacy. In a recent Instagram post, Gunn provided some insight into the tone of their new DC Universe.

Ever since Gunn and Safran took over DC Studios, there has been speculation among fans that every film under their banner would have a similar tone to Gunn’s previous work on the Guardians of the Galaxy films. However, according to Gunn, the tone of the DC Universe will actually shift from project to project, reflecting the unique sensibilities of the filmmakers involved.

And this is the best approach. The beauty of the DC Universe lies in its ability to tell a diverse range of stories based on the creative vision of each individual filmmaker. If Gunn and Safran embrace this mindset as they helm DC Studios, fans can have confidence that Superman: Legacy and all other DCU projects will be in capable hands.

The Future of the DC Universe

In addition to discussing the tone of the new DC Universe, Gunn and Safran also revealed some of their plans for its future. Their vision includes locked scripts, but also allows for flexibility and a unified storyline across various media platforms such as film, television, animation, and video games. It’s worth noting that this approach does not involve a complete reboot, as elements from previous DC regimes may be incorporated into their overall eight-to-year plan.

Since the announcement of the new DC Universe, we have already seen the releases of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Blue Beetle. And there is still more to come, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom slated for a 2023 release. As for whether characters from these movies will make appearances in the new DCU, only Gunn and Safran have the answer to that question.
