Irish Grinstead, one of the talented singers from the girl group 702, passed away at the age of 43. The heartbreaking news was announced by Irish’s sister and fellow group member, Lemisha Grinstead, through an Instagram post.
In her post, Lemisha expressed her deep sorrow and revealed that Irish had been battling serious medical issues for a long time. She also shared heartfelt words about her sister, describing her as a bright and beautiful person, both inside and out. Lemisha cherished the joy of performing on stage with Irish and asked for prayers and privacy for their grieving family.
Although the cause of Irish’s passing was not mentioned, the group had previously informed fans in December that she would be taking a medical leave of absence due to her health condition. This news left fans concerned and hoping for her recovery.
702, named after the Las Vegas area code, consisted of the Grinstead sisters, Irish and Lemisha, as well as Kameelah Williams. They debuted with their album “No Doubt” in 1996, which featured popular singles like “Steelo” and served as the theme song for Nickelodeon’s TV series “Cousin Skeeter.” Their second album, simply titled “702,” was released three years later and included the chart-topping hit “Where My Girls At.”
During their career, the group went through some changes, with Cree La’More temporarily joining in place of Williams. They released the single “Pootie Tangin'” for the film “Pootie Tang,” and then Williams returned to the group. Another album, “Star,” followed, featuring the single “I Still Love You.”
In 2006, 702 took a break and remained inactive for 11 years. However, in 2021, the Grinstead sisters participated in the reality series “BET Presents: The Encore.” The show followed former girl-group members as they attempted to create a supergroup and produce an album in just 30 days.
Throughout their career, 702 received recognition and accolades. They were nominated for an American Music Award, a BET Award, and multiple Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards. Notably, they won the award for best R&B/soul album of the year by a group, band, or duo for “No Doubt.”
