October 2023 – Iconic chef and former Food Network star, Michael Chiarello, passed away at the age of 61 in Napa, California. According to his company, Gruppo Chiarello, he was hospitalized due to an acute allergic reaction which ultimately led to anaphylactic shock.
In a joint statement, the Chiarello family expressed their profound sadness over the loss of their beloved patriarch. They remembered him as a culinary genius, bursting with creativity, and devoted to his family. They emphasized his ability to bring people together through the joy of shared meals, leaving lasting memories at the dining table.
During his illustrious career, Chiarello hosted a variety of cooking shows on PBS, Food Network, Fine Living, and Cooking Channel for a decade. He also made appearances as a guest chef on popular televised programs such as the Today show and The View. His acclaimed cooking show, “Easy Entertaining With Michael Chiarello,” ran for an impressive 10 seasons on Food Network and earned him an Emmy award.
In addition to his television success, Chiarello delved into winemaking in 1999 and became a respected name in the industry. He even served as a judge on Bravo’s Top Chef and Top Chef Masters competitions. In 2011, he participated in Food Network’s Next Iron Chef contest. The following year, Esquire magazine crowned him Chef of The Year.
His loyal partners in Gruppo Chiarello expressed their gratitude for the impact he had on the culinary world. They highlighted his lasting legacy through his renowned restaurants, Bottega, Coqueta in San Francisco and Napa Valley, and Ottimo. As a tribute to Chiarello, his family kindly requested donations to be made to Meals on Wheels in lieu of flowers. This gesture reflects Chiarello’s empathy and concern for those in need.
