Korean Box Office: ‘The Marvels’ Reigns on Boring Weekend in Seoul

Alright, folks, let’s talk about the latest happenings in the Korea box office. “The Marvels” swooped in and took the number one spot on its opening weekend, raking in a cool $2.35 million between Friday and Sunday. Not too shabby, right? But hold your excitement because it seems like even the mighty power of Marvel couldn’t quite save the box office from its recent slump.

According to the data from Kobis, “The Marvels” managed to grab a market share of nearly 42%, which is nothing to sneeze at. Over its five-day opening run, the film pulled in a total of $3.4 million. Impressive, for sure, but let’s put things into perspective. In March 2019, the franchise film’s predecessor “Captain Marvel” earned a whopping $15.6 million on its opening weekend and went on to reach an aggregate of $39.0 million. Ouch, talk about big shoes to fill.

Now, let’s not forget about the previous box office champion, “The Boy and the Heron.” It had been reigning supreme for the two previous weekends, but “The Marvels” came in and snatched the crown. “The Boy and the Heron” had to settle for second place in its third weekend on release, earning $1.15 million. After nearly three weeks on release, it has accumulated $12.8 million. Not too shabby!

Moving on, let’s take a look at some other contenders in the box office race. The Korean crime drama, “The Boys,” took $539,000 in its second weekend, bringing its 12-day cumulative to $2.81 million. “Love Reset” earned $390,000 and has now accumulated $15.5 million since releasing at the beginning of October. I guess love really does conquer all, even at the box office.

And how about that Australian-made horror film, “Talk to Me”? It passed the $1 million mark in aggregate, with $233,000 on its second weekend in Korea. Looks like the land down under is bringing some chills and thrills to the Korean audience.

But let’s not overlook the music scene. “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” placed seventh by revenues (and ninth by ticket sales numbers) with $110,000. After two weekends, it has a cumulative of $428,000. Hey, Taylor Swift fans are definitely showing their love for the pop sensation.

And speaking of music, another concert film, “My SHINee World,” placed eighth by revenues (and tenth by ticket sales) with $89,000. After two weekends, it has a cumulative of $324,000. K-pop fans are definitely out in force to support their favorite acts.

Let’s not forget about the animated contenders in the race. Japanese animation “Blue Giant” ranked ninth by earnings with $56,000 over the weekend. Its four-week cumulative is now $742,000. And the U.S. animation “PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie” rounded out the top ten, managing $40,000 in its sixth weekend of release. That gave it a cumulative total of $1.15 million. Looks like the pups are still going strong in the box office.

So, there you have it, folks. “The Marvels” may have taken the top spot, but it looks like the box office is still struggling to regain its summer highs. Let’s see what the next weekend brings and if any new contenders can shake things up. Until then, keep on supporting your favorite films and let’s see where the box office race takes us next!
