Kelsey Grammer is on a mission to bring back the one and only Diane Chambers from “Cheers” for the “Frasier” reboot. While he’s not planning on inviting the whole “Cheers” gang to the party, he’s got a soft spot for Shelley Long’s character and wants to give her some closure.
In an interview on “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” Grammer expressed his desire to see Diane return, stating, “I would like to see Diane come back… for one of those reasons of Frasier to be able to put something to bed. To end up with a nice thing between them.” Ah, sweet closure, isn’t it?
He went on to explain that when he first landed the role of Frasier, he envisioned the character as someone who loved Diane with his whole heart, defining who he is and how he approaches life. Aww, how romantic!
For those who need a bit of a refresher, Frasier’s character was introduced in “Cheers” as Diane’s love interest, and then the two had a bit of a “will they, won’t they” dance going on with Sam Malone. Long made several appearances on the original “Frasier,” so there’s definitely some history there.
But in the new series, Dr. Crane is back in Boston, and the “Cheers” bar is closed. However, Grammer initially wanted to bring back the whole original cast in a different setting where they had all moved on, but alas, that idea got shot down.
For the reboot, Grammer decided to take the character back to his roots and give him a reason to return to Boston, because apparently, he didn’t leave the city “the right way” before. You gotta love a good ol’ geographical happenstance!
But wait, there’s more! Grammer also hinted that the show will pay tribute to John Mahoney, who played Dr. Crane’s father in the original series. He got emotional talking about the late actor, saying, “John died a few years back and I just thought, ‘We can’t do the show again without honoring John,’ and it has to begin with the fact that John is gone and dad is gone, and so then, I become dad.” Aww, we’re not crying, you are!
Well, it looks like the “Frasier” reboot is shaping up to be quite an emotional ride. But hey, who knows, maybe we’ll get to see Diane making a grand return after all! Stay tuned for more updates and get ready for a nostalgic trip down memory lane with the new “Frasier” series!
