Guess what? Taylor Swift has done it again! On the day of the release of her album “1989 (Taylor’s Version),” she set a Spotify record by becoming the artist with the most streams in a single day in the history of the streaming service. Spotify announced this exciting news on Saturday.
But that’s not all. “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” also set a record as Spotify’s most-streamed album in a single day so far in 2023. Talk about an incredible achievement!
Although Spotify did not provide specific numbers for the album or Taylor Swift’s total streams as an artist, it did share some other interesting data. One of the new Vault tracks from the album, called “‘Slut!’ (Taylor’s Version),” debuted at No. 1 in the U.S. with 5.2 million streams, and globally with 11.3 million streams. Additionally, on the global chart, another non-Vault track, “Style (Taylor’s Version),” debuted with 11.6 million streams.
What’s even more impressive is that Taylor Swift broke her own single-day streaming record. She previously held the record for the most streams in a single day by an individual artist when she released her last album, “Midnights,” on October 21.
Let’s take a closer look at the impact of Taylor Swift’s album on Spotify’s top charts. As of Saturday afternoon, all 21 tracks on the standard edition of “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” occupied the top 21 positions on Spotify’s daily U.S. top 50 ranking. The album’s deluxe edition, which includes a remix of “Bad Blood” featuring Kendrick Lamar, secured the 23rd spot on the chart. It’s phenomenal to see Taylor Swift dominating the charts like this!
The domination doesn’t stop there. On Spotify’s global top 50 chart, the album is also incredibly dominant. At the time of writing, all 21 tracks from “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” occupied the first 17 positions on the chart. This level of success is truly outstanding.
American listeners seem to have a strong preference for the new Vault tracks on the album. On the U.S. Spotify chart, four out of the five Vault songs currently hold the top four positions, with “‘Slut!'” leading the way. However, on the global chart, “Style (Taylor’s Version)” retains the top spot, pushing “‘Slut!'” to second place.
With such an impressive start on Spotify, it’s likely that “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” will surpass the opening-day streaming numbers of Swift’s previous re-recorded album, “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version),” released just three and a half months ago. “Speak Now (TV)” had the best first week of any album in 2023 so far, with 716,000 units sold. Of those units, 507,000 were pure album sales. Whether “1989 (TV)” can surpass its predecessor’s first-week numbers will depend not only on streaming but also on album sales. The final sales figures will be reported by Luminate one week from Sunday. However, the increasing number of streams bodes well for the album’s success, especially considering the availability of multiple vinyl variants.
Now, for the curious ones among us, the least popular songs on the album (although they are still more popular than anything else out there from anyone else in the U.S.) are the two ballads from “1989.” “This Love” and “You Are in Love” have the lowest daily streams in the U.S. with 2.5 and 2.4 million, respectively. While these numbers are still impressive, they are overshadowed by the eight songs that consistently receive more than 4 million streams per day in the U.S.
The high commercial expectations for “Taylor’s Version” of “1989” are justified. It is widely considered her most popular album, despite ranking just behind “Fearless” in sales. The original “1989” album from 2014 has been certified nine-times-platinum and has constantly remained in the top 20 of the Billboard chart in recent months due to the Eras Tour. However, now that Swifties will primarily switch their allegiance to the fresh version, this will likely change.
