In a surprising move, Marvel Studios has decided to rework its highly-anticipated Disney Plus series, Daredevil: Born Again, after parting ways with the show’s original writers and directors.
The decision, which was revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, was made in September 2023 as part of a creative overhaul. Marvel realized that the current direction of Born Again was not aligned with their vision, leading to the dismissal of head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman, as well as the directors for the remaining episodes.
Charlie Cox Returns as Matt Murdock
Daredevil: Born Again sees the return of Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, a character beloved by audiences from the popular Netflix series. However, the approach taken by Ord and Corman received internal criticism for focusing too much on the legal procedural elements of the story, rather than the intense action and violence associated with the character.
According to THR, Cox’s Daredevil didn’t make his appearance in the superhero suit until the fourth episode of Born Again. This creative choice contributed to Marvel reevaluating the show’s direction and deciding to make changes.
Despite the revamp, Marvel plans to salvage certain scenes and episodes from the initial production, ensuring that the investment won’t go to waste. Ord and Corman will still be involved in the project as executive producers, but in different roles.
An Evolving Approach to Television Production
In addition to reworking Daredevil: Born Again, Marvel is also rethinking its approach to television production. The studio is moving away from the head-writer model and instead looking to hire showrunners who can provide consistent creative vision throughout the entire show. This change was partly influenced by Jessica Gao’s post-production contributions to Marvel’s She-Hulk.
