The Last of Us is set to begin production for its second season in early 2024, aiming for a premiere in 2025, according to HBO boss Casey Bloys. This announcement was made during an event held in New York. The series was renewed in January after achieving the second largest premiere since House of the Dragon, following Boardwalk Empire’s launch in 2010.
The show, based on Naughty Dog’s popular video game, is created by Craig Mazin, known for his work on Chernobyl, and Neil Druckmann. It is set in a post-apocalyptic world, 20 years after the fall of modern civilization. The protagonist, Joel (played by Pedro Pascal), a hardened survivor, is tasked with smuggling Ellie (portrayed by Bella Ramsey), a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a simple job evolves into a harrowing journey filled with danger, as they rely on each other for survival while traversing the United States.
The first season of The Last of Us features an impressive cast, including Gabriel Luna, Anna Torv, Nico Parker, Murray Bartlett, Nick Offerman, Melanie Lynskey, Storm Reid, Merle Dandridge, Jeffrey Pierce, Lamar Johnson, Keivonn Woodard, Graham Greene, Elaine Miles, Ashley Johnson, and Troy Baker.
The series is written and executive produced by Mazin and Druckmann. It is a co-production between Sony Pictures Television and HBO and is also executive produced by Carolyn Strauss, Evan Wells, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Rose Lam. The production companies involved include PlayStation Productions, Word Games, The Mighty Mint, and Naughty Dog.
